988 vs 911

When Should You Call 988 vs. 911?

“You matter. You’re not alone. Stay one more day.”

Knowing who to call — and when — can make all the difference. Whether you’re struggling yourself or worried about someone else, here’s what you need to know:

Call or Text 988

For emotional distress, mental health struggles, or suicidal thoughts. Use 988 when:

• You’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or hopeless

• You’re having thoughts of suicide or self-harm

• You’re worried about someone else’s mental health

• You need someone to talk to, but you’re not in physical danger

What happens when you call:

• You’re connected to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

• A trained crisis counselor answers the phone — not law enforcement

• They’ll listen, talk with you, and help guide you toward support and safety

• The conversation is confidential, judgment-free, and available 24/7

• You can also text 988 or chat online at 988lifeline.org

Call 911

For life-threatening emergencies or immediate danger

Use 911 when:

• Someone is actively attempting suicide or has already harmed themselves

• There’s a medical emergency, overdose, or serious injury

• A person is in immediate danger of hurting themselves or others

• Someone is unresponsive, unconscious, or needs urgent care

What happens when you call:

• A 911 dispatcher answers your call

• Emergency services (police, EMTs, or firefighters) are sent to the location

• 911 responders are trained for crisis situations, but may not specialize in mental health

• Use 911 when time is critical or someone’s physical safety is at risk

Not Sure Which to Call?

When in doubt:

• If it’s a safety emergency → Call 911

• If it’s a mental health crisis without immediate danger → Call 988

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Reaching out is a sign of strength — not weakness.
